Ally McCoist fears Harry Maguire faces an uphill battle to save his Manchester United career, despite an impressive World Cup campaign.
The under-fore United skipper arrived in Qatar lacking match fitness having suffered an injury earlier this season,
Maguire had already fallen down Erik ten Hag’s pecking order with Raphael Varane and summer signing Lisandro Martinez forming an impressive looking partnership at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence.
The former Leicester City centre-half appeared somewhere near back to his best in Qatar but a route back into United’s starting XI looks far from straightforward.
Speaking about his skipper’s future earlier this week, Ten Hag said: ‘I’ve been asked many times. It’s clear he is good enough to play at the highest level.
‘He has, for England, good games almost all the time. He had a period in Manchester where he performed badly. Then, of course there are difficulties.
‘But when he is working hard, he gets that confidence. You are seeing that with the way he is playing for England.
‘We want him to bring it on the pitch for Manchester United. I expect from him, the team knows what they expect from him. If he does that, he will be a great player for us.’
Should he fail to win back his place, McCoist doesn’t believe Maguire will stick around and believe Tottenham would represent the ideal destination and deemed north London rivals Arsenal too good for the 29-year-old.
‘I think he will move. I don’t think he may move, I’ll go one further – I think he WILL move. He isn’t going to hang around – he wants to play.

‘I don’t think there are any guarantees that he’s going to march back into the Manchester United team, not in front of [Raphael] Varane and [Lisandro] Martinez.
‘Straight away off the top of my head, I’d say he’s good enough for Spurs. Arsenal? Maybe not at this moment in time.
‘But he’s been one of England’s best players at the World Cup.’
