BBC Breakfast star Naga Munchetty has opened up on a scary experience where she felt ‘intimated’ by a man as she walked home alone.
The 47-year-old has been raising discussions about women’s safety after joining the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign as a way of raising awareness.
As part of the project, Naga spoke on BBC Radio 5 Live about a heart-breaking fears about nights out, as she joined a group of female students in Leeds who felt the same way.
She explained: ‘I’m 5ft4, I do walk with keys in my hand, I’m quite small-framed. If I’m walking alone I do look around every 30 seconds, and I constantly survey what’s going on in front, to the side, and behind me.’
Naga continued: ‘The thing that would help me, if I heard something, even if it was just a clearing of the throat, or music or a phone conversation, I would acknowledge you, and I can only talk about how I feel, and I would feel safer, if the man who was walking behind me crossed the road and sped up so he was walking in front of me.

‘Because then I wouldn’t have to worry about what you were doing behind me and if you were going to run up behind me or run up and hit me or take something from me or push me.
‘That’s the reality.’
Following sharing the story and listening to the experiences of the students, Naga later revealed an incident in which she felt intimidated by a stranger.
She explained: ‘I had men who were calling in and saying, “I imagined when I was younger I said some awful things and had been a bit off if a girl didn’t welcome my advances”. It’s about teaching people who are rejected to not take offence and for it to not be an issue.’

Naga continued to The Daily Star: ‘I have had it where I’ve walked along the street and a guy has said, “Hi, you’re looking great” and I just look at them and think inside, I’m fuming. I haven’t invited that. You’re intimidating me.
‘Then you respond and you say, “Thanks” and you carry on walking or you look down and walk on and then they turn around and go, “Hey, I’m talking to you. What’s your name?” I don’t want to give you my name.

‘And then you say, “I’m really busy, nice to meet you” and you move on. But then you’re like “Oh what, you’re too good to talk to me?”‘
She added: ‘It’s one very specific example but you know this scenario happens and it does happen.’
