Manchester United are planning a move for Cody Gakpo (AMA/Getty)
Manchester United are set to begin talks with PSV over a deal for Cody Gakpo, according to reports.
The 23-year-old was close to joining Leeds United in the summer transfer window but the winger U-turned on deadline day and ended up staying at PSV.
Gakpo has been the Dutch club’s standout performer this season with 12 goals and 15 assists so far, while at the World Cup he found the net in all three of Netherlands’ matches in Group A.
According to MailOnline, United are now interested in signing Gakpo and will open talks ‘in the coming days’ with PSV.
The report claims that the Dutch club are holding out for a £50 million transfer fee, but United are looking to secure a deal closer to £40m.
United had approached PSV about Gakpo in the summer but instead prioritised their £86m deal to sign Antony from Ajax.

Speaking last month, PSV’s former technical director, John de Jong, who left the Dutch club in September, claims Gakpo had been holding out for a move to United in the summer.
‘Cody has been waiting a long time for the transfer to Manchester United and it seemed to be coming,’ De Jong told NOS.
‘A week before the end of the transfer window that fell through. After that he had two options in the Premier League, but you never know how that will turn out.
‘He made the choice himself. In the end I did have a discussion with the board, whether or not to sell. I think it is really better for him that he stayed.’
Meanwhile, Gakpo has indicated that he is waiting for United to reignite their interest ahead of the January transfer window.
‘I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there?,’ the winger told Dutch newspaper NRC this week.
‘Now I wait for everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.’
