Boxing Day sales are almost upon us (Picture: Getty Images)
Christmas shopping might be done and dusted for another year, but once the big day is over your attention may well turn to another kind of retail therapy – namely, the sales.
The post-Christmas sales have become as synonymous with the festive season as turkey and tinsel, and with people watching the pennies in the wake of the cost of living crisis, the chance to nab a few bargains is more tempting than ever.
You could even pick up a few bits and pieces for next Christmas, if you really want to get organised early and save money at the same time – but just when to the Christmas sales typically begin?
Here’s what you need to know…
When do the Christmas sales start?
In general, the Christmas sales get underway on Boxing Day, December 26 – with most retailers traditionally sticking to this date when it comes to offering up the big reductions.
However some may decide to kick things off earlier – for example last year Zara launched its online sale at 9pm on Christmas Day last year.
So if you’re planning on shopping online, you should keep an eye on your favourite retailer just in case they do spring an early sale surprise on customers.

Some shops have also started their sales early – with the likes of Boots, Next, John Lewis and Superdrug already offering reductions to customers, pre-Christmas.
Online, Amazon is also offering ‘last-minute Christmas deals’, running until December 22.
How long do Christmas sales last?
You could even stock up for next Christmas
There’s no set date for when the post-Christmas sales end, although most will run through until the middle of January.
It remains to be seen whether the shops will see the queues normally associated with Boxing Day sales this year, given the number of people who now prefer to shop from the comfort of their own homes online.
A 2021 survey found a third of people said they prefer online shopping in general, 32% highlighted it is more efficient and allows them to spend time with family and friends during the holidays, and 27% do not want to brave the unpredictable British weather.
Some 22% of those questioned also said they were looking to support smaller businesses and those closer to home in the sales.
