After the tragic events of 9/11 back in 2001, a group of brave soldiers from the US Special Forces were immediately deployed to Afghanistan to “handle” the Taliban. These ’12 Strong’ men had to work together with a local warlord to cross the rough landscape and complete the mission.
Mostly, the movie concerns the crack US team who are parachuted behind enemy lines so that, in tandem with a local Northern Army led by General Dostum. 12 Strong follows the first US Special Forces team sent to Afghanistan in the wake of September 11. Its mission was to help General Abdul Rashid Dostum of the Northern Alliance liberate the Taliban stronghold of Mazar-i-Sharif.
Dialling down his charisma, Hemsworth plays Captain Mitch Nelson, the commander with no combat experience who must try to earn Dostum’s (Navid Negahban) trust while ensuring that inter-factional hostilities do not derail the US mission. With winter approaching, Nelson has three weeks, 11 men and six horses.
As is often the case with traumatic events in a nation’s history, Hollywood has been relatively reluctant to tell stories about 9/11 on the big screen.
It’s a tough sell for any studio. this is no different, stays clear away from any contention of serving an opinion on the merits of the war or how the impact has devastated the country and the Afghan people. Instead it serves a good action led theme of brawn and US marine type cliches.
Hemsworth echoes the sentiment, saying that changing the western world’s view on Afghanistan and the war was one of his reasons for wanting to do the film. Let us know if you think it worked!
