The US, UK and France have carried out air and missile strikes in Syria in retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack last Saturday.

The US says three targets were struck – Sites near Damascus and Homs were hit in response to an alleged chemical attack on the town of Douma on 7 April.
The Pentagon says President Assad’s chemical weapons capability has been set back by years and President Trump tweets “Mission Accomplished!”.
Russia’s President Putin condemns the strikes; another urgent UN Security Council meeting is expected.
Russia says many missiles were also aimed at other strategic targets but many were intercepted by air defences. The US has used these air strikes to take key positions on the ground away from Russia. Claiming Syrian air defence intercepted at least 71 cruise missiles fired by US, UK and France forces.
Downing Street has published its legal case for its part in the strikes, which targeted military bases.
Prime Minister Theresa May faced a backlash from the domestic opposition after launching military strikes on Syria without consulting parliament.
Many political commentators have questioned both the timing and the legality of the reports on a gas attack in Douma outside of Damascus earlier this week.
Both Syria and Russia – which provides military support to the Syrian government – have reacted angrily to the action.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed the US-led operation in Syria, calling it an “appropriate” response to the recent chemical attack on civilians.
China’s foreign ministry said on Saturday that it believes a political settlement is the only way to resolve the Syrian issue and called for a full, fair and objective investigation into suspected chemical weapon attacks in Syria.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned “The attack this morning against Syria is a crime,” Khamenei said in remarks published on his Telegram channel. “The American president, the French president and the British prime minister are criminals.”

Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson “The rest of the Syrian war must proceed as it will,” he said, adding that the “primary purpose is to say no to the use of barbaric chemical weapons”.
With the alias claiming a mini victory lead by President Trump, Russia has promised a response ‘in kind’ to the air strikes.
