Eight killed in India train crash A train accident in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal has left eight people dead and around 25 injured. The collision occurred on Monday morning when a goods train rammed into the stationary Kanchenjungha Express in the New Jalpaiguri area. Dramatic footage from the scene shows one wagon of the express train suspended in the air. The cause of the accident remains unclear, but authorities have promised a thorough investigation. Singapore races to clean up beaches after oil spill Singapore authorities are urgently working to clean up a significant oil spill that has blackened the southern coastline following a shipping accident. On Friday, a Netherlands-flagged dredging boat collided with a Singaporean fuel ship moored in the shipping straits off the city-state. The collision occurred after the dredger lost engine power and drifted into the Singaporean vessel, puncturing its oil tank. Israel announces military pause on Gaza road to let in aid The Israeli military has announced a daily “tactical pause of military activity” along a key road in southern Gaza to allow more humanitarian aid to enter. However, they emphasised that this is not a ceasefire and combat operations in Rafah will continue. These pauses, which started on Saturday, will run from 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT) until 19:00 local time each day until further notice. Eight Israeli soldiers killed in Rafah operation, IDF says Eight Israeli soldiers were killed on Saturday in a blast in southern Gaza, marking the deadliest incident for the Israeli army since January. The soldiers were in an armoured vehicle when a major explosion occurred, reportedly detonating explosive “engineering material,” according to a preliminary investigation by the Israeli military. At least 14 Hajj pilgrims die in intense heat At least 14 Jordanian citizens have died from heatstroke during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, according to Jordanian officials. The extreme heat has also left 17 Jordanians missing. The Jordanian foreign ministry reported that these deaths were caused by a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 46°C (114.8°F).  Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and any able Muslim is obliged to perform this journey once in their lifetime. Many of Monday’s front pages lead on the discovery of Dr Michael Mosley’s body after the famed TV presenter had gone missing while on holiday in Greece. 

Elsewhere, politics makes the front pages with the UK general election around the corner, and news of a snap general election in France – amid a rise in far-right support.

The back pages lead on Harry Kane’s comments after England lost 1-0 to Iceland – at Wembley, the final match before the start of the EUROs. British star Dina Asher-Smith is also pictured on the back pages after she won gold at the European Championships.

Dr Mosley’s body was discovered on a hillside near the Agia Marina beach bar on Sunday. CCTV footage reportedly shows him descending a slope before disappearing behind a wall.

The incident, believed to be an ambush by suspected militants, has not been claimed by any group. The region has been a longstanding conflict zone between India and Pakistan.

In a televised address from the Élysée Palace, Macron acknowledged the voters’ message and emphasised the need for “a clear majority in serenity and harmony” to counter the far-right’s progress.

During a news conference in Tel Aviv, Gantz cited Netanyahu’s obstruction of achieving “true victory” as his reason for stepping down and called for the prime minister to set a date for elections.
