Amnesty says Pakistani officials’ inadequate response to the smog raises significant human rights concerns as Lahore is considered one of the world’s most polluted cities. Tens of thousands of people in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore are at risk of respiratory disease because of poor air quality related to thick smog hanging over the region, an international rights group said Friday. The Trump administration is softening its stance on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, it has been announced.  Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the government will no longer abide by the decades-old legal opinion that found civilian settlements in occupied areas as inconsistent with international law.  “After carefully studying all sides of the legal debate, the United States has concluded that the establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per se, inconsistent with international law,” he said.  “Calling the establishment of civilian settlements inconsistent with international law has not worked. Police in Hong Kong used tear gas to push back dozens of protesters trying to escape a university campus after a night of violence in the city.  Around 200 protesters have occupied Polytechnic University for days, they even set fire to the entrance in an effort to keep police out. The protesters have been firing arrows and catapulting petrol bombs at police. Israel carried out fresh strikes on Gaza targeting Hamas early on Saturday morning in response to ‘unverified’ rockets which the army allege were fired from the Palestinian enclave, despite a ceasefire that began two days ago.
