The Ministry of Economy, Commerce and Business has agreed on Thursday with the Autonomous Communities in the Internationalization Council of Internationalization to meet each month to monitor the impact of the tariffs raised by Donald Trump, while agreed to create the creation of a working group so that the territories participate in the design of the ICEX response plan. This action has been criticized by the Minister of Economy, Finance and Employment of the Community of Madrid, Rocío Albert, who has denounced that the Government of Pedro Sánchez has agreed this new commercial plan “with Junts, with their backs to the Spaniards and the CCAA.”
As they have pointed out to the election.
He has also criticized “harshly” the proposals that have been approved during the Interterritorial Council “without any accurate estimate of the possible repercussions of tariffs on Spain and before setting a common position with European partners” and, therefore, “without properly responding to the challenges.”
In addition, Albert has denounced that the plan “is nothing new or effective”, but is “a reformulation of existing measures that include resources such as ICO credits that companies will have to return, reorientations of European funds already committed and programs approved before the tariff conflict.”
During her speech, the counselor has underlined the need to act with “diplomacy, dialogue and negotiation” to avoid a commercial escalation that could aggravate the economic situation.
“It is time to strengthen the Atlantic Axis and act in a coordinated manner within the European Economic Block. We position ourselves against any commercial conflict against the United States, which would only worsen the situation and have an entry in Spain,” he said.
As explained by the same sources, the head of Economics in Madrid has highlighted the importance of performing a detailed analysis to design specific aids that benefit the most affected sectors, “avoiding linear distributions or empty propaganda campaigns.”
“It is essential to act surgically in truly harmed sectors and companies, prioritizing objective and territorial criteria,” added the counselor, who has claimed that they have as priority the SMEs and self -employed, especially vulnerable sectors before the repercussions of the tariff conflict initiated by the Trump administration.
“It is not appropriate to look for new partners”
After the Council, Rocío Albert has declared before the media that the meeting has been held “has been in a very educated tone”, although he has influenced the Minister of Economy, Carlos Body, that “what we need is more than a packaging of measures.”
“Our natural ally is the West and where we have to be with the United States, Latin America. It does not seem the most appropriate to go looking for new partners, such as China. I think it is not the best time to approach them,” he said.
The counselor pointed out that “they will look for the best” for the sectors and for the affected companies since “uncertainty can condition them more.” Finally, it has remarked that “the plan of the Government of Spain will be approved if it is” good “and has” real “measures to improve and help exports and competitiveness.
THE MADRID PROPOSALS
For its part, the Community of Madrid has proposed to face the situation a reduction of taxes to stimulate economic activity, freezing of the reduction of the working day, the decrease in social contributions and business taxation, the prolongation of the useful life of nuclear centrals, the review of bureaucratic obstacles or the strengthening of external promotion.
The counselor will meet this afternoon with CEIM, the Chamber of Commerce and the main Madrid business associations to advance the precise identification of the economic impact and propose more useful measures.
