President Donald Trump came into power with many promises. Just like Obama, he promised change, but he offered a more radical change from the status quo. One that would work for the average man, create more local jobs, curb immigration and build the famous Mexican Wall.
Instead, he has taken his TV show ‘The Apprentice’ and fired people within his administration, stoked divisions between communities, irritated and scapegoated Muslims and disgraced transgender people. President Trump is historically unpopular, and despite having a Republican-controlled Congress, he hasn’t passed any major legislation. Many measures Trump promised to enact on day one — including overhauling the tax code, building a wall on the southern border, and repealing and replacing Obamacare — have been delayed, curtailed, or possibly killed by disagreements within the GOP.
His first major move, the Muslim ban, which the courts have overruled him. Since then he has managed a to pass a watered down version of his ban but he hasn’t been able to deliver what he promised.
Even his Mexican wall project seems to be a hoax; this week a transcript of his conversation with the Mexican Premier has shown how he has asked his counterpart not to say that the Mexicans will not be paying for the wall, ‘You need to stop saying that to the media … You can’t keep saying that’.
Unable to repeal Obamacare, an almost guaranteed slam dunk by the republicans under any other leadership, but with his strained relationship with the Republican Party since his nomination, he hasn’t been able to get that passed through the government system.
He is also struggling to keep his Whitehouse under control, having already fired so many members of his senior administration, Donald Trump has forced out Reince Priebus as the White House chief of staff and replaced him with the homeland security secretary, Gen John Kelly. Before that he fired: the communications director Scaramucci, White House Chief of Staff; Sean Spicer, White House Press Secretary; Katie Walsh, Deputy White House Chief of Staff; James B. Comey Jr, FBI Director; Jason Miller, transition team Communications Director; Michael Flynn, National Security Adviser; and Sally Yates, Acting Attorney General.
The headlines during his presidency so far show so many u-turns he has had to do and anyone who seems to question his policies or criticize them, is lambasted as fake news; the BBC and CNN have both been attacked by Trump on twitter.
So what has he been able achieve; he has been able to galvanize Twitter, unlike any leader before him. His entertaining nature, means he commands an audience with the media, like him or loath him everyone pays attention to the billionaire.
He has also made good relations with Russians. Perhaps more through his back channel connections. And although no official findings have been determined but the political and judicially wheels are turning to determine whether any misappropriations took place between the Trump team and the Russian hacking.
No one doubts his ability as a businessman but that transition from a capitalist to reformist seems a big stretch. Perhaps, a stretch too far. So much of the country is campaigning against him, the feminist march earlier this year built its demonstration around his misogynistic campaigning.
But amid all the chaos of President Trump’s first six months in office, he has managed to enact some measures that have a concrete effect on Americans’ lives.
Put Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court. Though Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell deserves the credit for stealing President Obama’s final Supreme Court appointment, technically it was Trump who replaced the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
In June he announced that the U.S. would pull out of the Paris climate accord. He said he decided to withdraw because the deal would hurt the American economy and U.S. workers, though experts say that’s untrue. Additionally, Trump rolled back around two dozen environmental rules and regulations, all within his first 100 days.
Shortly after taking office President Trump signed an executive order requiring federal agencies to cut two existing regulations for every new regulation, and established task forces in every agency for “removing job killing regulations and increasing economic opportunity.” Working with congressional leaders, Trump made unprecedented use of the obscure Congressional Review Act to quickly undo 13 regulations passed under President Obama.
Will he make any changes to tackle austerity, bring in his business mind to make a difference, Or does he have a plan to tackle this, It remains to be seen. But Barack Obama had warned that Donald Trump’s election could signal the end of the American experiment in self-government and move more towards a dictator who is ruling by his ego.
Throughout his campaign, Trump displayed the instincts of a would-be authoritarian — encouraging his supporters to perpetrate violence against protesters, demonizing the press, and threatening to jail his chief political rival upon his election.
For many liberals, the idiosyncratic dangers of the Trump presidency paled in comparison to the “ordinary” ones of Republican rule. Which one do yo prefer after 6 months, Is he Incompetent or a genius that we cant understand, If you follow his rhetoric all will be reveled shortly.
