The Judicial system in the UK
The term crime is used to describe violent and non-violent acts. In the UK, courts and police systems are separated into three sections, based on the different judicial systems of England and Wales, Scotland and North Ireland.
In England and Wales, the Home Office (the government department responsible for reducing and preventing crime), law enforcement and the Ministry of Justice (which runs the Justice system, including courts and prisons) are responsible for crime.
In Scotland, the responsibility falls on the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
Crime in England and Wales
In England and Wales, there are two kinds of criminal trials in England and Wales: “Summary” and “on indictment”.
In the adult court system, a “summary” trial takes place in a magistrates court, while trials on “indictment” take place in the Crown Court. Despite the two options, almost all criminal cases even the most serious ones, take place in the magistrates’ court.
Furthermore, a person could be convicted by the Magistrates court and be sent to the Crown for sentencing, (where the magistrates feel they do not have adequate sentencing powers).
UK Crime news and rates in England and Wales have, in most years since 1995, declined – though there was a rise in violent crime in the late 2010s. A survey found that in 2015, crime in England and Wales was at its lowest level since 1981 – has decreased dramatically since its peak in 1995.

The Home office
What is the purpose of the Home Office?
The Home Office is the government department that is responsible for immigration and passports, drug policy, crime, fire, counter-terrorism and police. The Home Office is headed by a government official whose title is the Home Secretary.
The current Home Secretary is responsible for reducing and preventing crime in England and Wales. And is responsible for managing the police forces around the country. In a very vague operations manual, The police chiefs and the Home secretary outline the number of police officers on the street, and the local police chiefs decided how they are used.
Why is it called the Home Office?
On 27 March 1782, the UK Home Office was formed by renaming the existing Southern Department, with all existing staff transferring to the new department.
On the same day, the Northern Department was renamed the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. To match the new names, there was a transfer of responsibilities between the two Departments of State.

Policing in England and Wales
Law enforcement in the UK is organised separately in each of the legal systems of the UK: England and Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.
Most law enforcement is carried out by police officers serving in regional police services. Beyond regional services, the UK has nationwide agencies such as the National Crime Agency and the national specialist units of certain territorial police forces such as the Specialist Operations Directorate of the Metropolitan Police.
Cops are granted certain powers to let them execute their duties – primarily protecting life and property, preservation of the peace, and preventing and detecting criminal offenses. These powers are often questioned with the amount of ‘Stop and search’ requests against black teens.
Crime in the United Kingdom has not dropped since the police were granted stop and search powers, but racist allegations towards the police have increased.
The Metropolitan Police
The Metropolitan Police Service (known as Metropolitan Police, Met Police, the Met, Scotland Yard) is the territorial police force responsible for the prevention of crime news daily and law enforcement in Greater London.
Beyond these duties, they are also responsible for some specialist matters throughout the UK, including protecting specific individuals such as the Monarch and members of the Royal family, members of government, and other officials.
The Met Police are known worldwide, but you may have also heard of the City of London Police. So, what is the difference between the City of London Police and the Metropolitan Police?
The Met Police cover the geographical area of the 32 London boroughs – but does not include the City of London – that is, the central financial district known as the “Square Mile” – which is policed by a separate force – the City of London Police.
Met police misconduct
The Met Police have come under serious scrutiny over the past few years after a series of scandals have been revealed and serious failures at the heart of the police force have had the spotlight shone on them.
The horrendous kidnap, rape and murder of Sarah Everard by then-serving Met Police officer Wayne Cozens. He was sentenced to life without parole as was reported by the latest crime news daily.
There were renewed calls for high-level resignations following the public outcry over the Met’s response to the Everard case. Two other serving Met cops and an ex-officer were charged with sharing offensive messages with killer Wayne Couzens.
There have been many incidents that have come to light that involves racism, homophobia and sexism within the department. An investigation undercovered “evidence of highly sexualized, violent and discriminatory messages” in messages between cops.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said there was evidence of “systemic sexism, racism, homophobia, discrimination, misogyny” in the Met; he accepted that there are “dedicated, decent, brave officers” as well.
