The tennis superstar Rafael Nadal will regain his world No 1 spot after his second round win over Hyeon Chung at the Paris Masters.
This victory means he cannot be overtaken this year as world No 1. The 16-time Grand Slam champion is 1,460 points clear of Swiss world number two Roger Federer in the world rankings.
It seemed an unlikely scenario at the end of last season when the left-hander withdrew from the French Open and missed Wimbledon with a wrist injury that then brought his season to an early end in October.
Nadal, who also finished 2008, 2010 and 2013 at the top of the rankings. This seemed almost improbable 12 months ago, with many experts fearing the end of Spaniards career. His enduring game style and relentless power stokes having taken their toll.
However, against all odds the Nadal has climbed to summit again, and won two grand slams along the way and apart from his old foe Roger Federer he seems to have the beating of the other players.
Rafael Nadal won the French Open and US Open in 2017 to give him a career total of 16 Grand Slam titles so far, who will bet against him adding a few more to that tally.
