The goal of returning peace to Ukraine is more alive than ever. The fear that the invasion of the regions of Donesk and Lugansk by Russia climb to a greater conflict is leading to the global powers to seek the mechanisms to return peace to the territory, especially after the approach conato that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, have had. China had spoken as a neutral actor and a peace catalyst in the territory, but Beijing had never raised the sending of troops to the area, until now.
According to Chinese diplomatic sources in Brussels cited by the German vertical Welt, the possibility of whether such a step would be conceivable or even desirable from a European perspective is being processed. Specifically, these diplomatic circles said that China’s incursion into that ‘coalition of volunteers’ proposed by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, “could potentially increase acceptance by Russia of Peace Troops in Ukraine.” Even so, they call the issue of “delicate.”
Any person who has dealt with Chinese diplomacy and knows minimally how they move in those areas, know that the fact that this message has jumped to the foreign press is a symptom that there will be movements soon about it. Beijing never leaves anything to chance and always avoid taking a false step in compromised issues.
This Thursday, March 27, the Gallic leader convened a defense summit in Paris with the aim of conducting a debate on the creation of a European mission that guarantees security in Ukraine after an eventual peace agreement. This ‘Army of Peace’ would replace the UN blue helmets, which are the ones that usually exert this function after the end of an armed conflict. Canada and Türkiye could also join this peace group.
Macron’s idea is to generate a coalition of European countries that are willing to send trained troops to ensure compliance with the agreements signed to return peace to Ukraine. The French leader called this summit “coalition of the willing.” The Paris Summit is also invited by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky and both Paris and London showed their disposition to the sending of peace troops to the front in case a high fire is signed. Something that Moscow completely rejected.
But the case that China, an ally of Russia, entered this equation of ‘The willing’ could deter Putin in his idea of sending peace troops. The relationship between Beijing and Moscow was much more reinforced since the Kremlin invaded Ukraine in 2022. Due to international sanctions, Putin had no choice but to look at Asia.
The United States said it will have new conversations with Russian and Ukrainian representatives this Monday. But Emmanuel Macron reiterated that the fact that Putin rejected the 30 -day fire proposed by the Trump and Zelenski shows that Russia “is not very interested in peace at this time,” said the French leader, also mentioning night attacks with drones and missiles by Moscow.
But Donald Trump’s little predictable movements regarding his conversations with Putin and alignment conatos between Washington and Moscow are causing European leaders to seek more defensive autonomy, to get away from the United States within NATO.
France, the United Kingdom and Germany are leading the initiative so that, gradually, Europe assumes own responsibilities in defensive matters and this high dependence on the United States is reduced within five to ten years. A plan that has the support of several European countries, including Spain.
In spite of everything, the Government of Pedro Sánchez remains cautious with the fact of sending troops to Ukraine. The president himself assured in mid -February since Paris, after the informal summit of leaders convened by Emmanuel Macron, that the sending of troops was a “premature” debate.
But Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, was more ambiguous about it, on several occasions that Spain “will not send troops to a war.” He also reiterated the government’s argument to qualify as “premature” the sending of peace forces “when we are not even close to reaching peace.”
