 Rapping up the weekend

So this was brought to my attention – it’s a good way to “rap up” what has been politically a bad week all round the world.

Breaking the Rules Of Parliament

Forget the Westminster sleaze and sex scandal, this one is much bigger though I doubt the mainstream media will treat it as such.

I’m talking Priti Patel who has absolutely breached the ministerial code, not just one clause of it but many!

I guess with all the anti-semitism smears hurled at the Labour Party few will decide to openly challenge this major breach and massive error of judgement by a UK Government minister.

Patel has more reason to resign than “fingers Fallon” but with a lame duck Prime Minister in Number 10 I doubt this will go beyond a very private rap on the knuckles.

And I’ve no doubt Israel’s London ambassador Mark Regev and the rest of the Zionist lobbies operating out of Westminster will remind Theresa May of just how fragile her leadership is should she try and remove Patel’s ministerial role.

Catalan Crisis Escalates

All sorts of European are split by the Catalonia crisis but anyone who believes in democracy will be appalled that Spain has now jailed some of Catalans elected leaders.

Eight sacked Catalan ministers have been remanded in custody by a high court judge over the region’s push for independence after prosecutors asked the judge to detain eight of the nine who turned up for questioning in Madrid. All are accused of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds.

In the meantime the state prosecutor has demanded a European arrest warrant for ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and four other dismissed Catalan ministers who did not show up.

Last week, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy imposed direct rule on Catalonia, dissolving the regional parliament and calling local elections for 21 December after the people there held a referendum in which 90 per cent of those who voted were in favour of independence.

 Glasgow kiss off for Suu Kyi

Glasgow City Council has decided to formally withdraw its offer to award the freedom of the city to Aung San Suu Kyi. The Burmese democracy leader is rapidly becoming a social pariah for her lack of action and empathy over the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya people.

Daily Mail in epic fail for women

I long ago consigned my subscription to The Daily Mail to the bin and when I see tweets like this it makes me realise why. Andrew Peirce ought to be ashamed of himself for writing such drivel and, of course, there’s always a female writer on standby to back up such misogyny … Jan Moir you are a traitor to your gender!

Catalan leader in Belgium

So the mystery of the absent Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont has been solved. He rocked up in Brussels on Tuesday but dismissed speculation that he and his cabinet ministers could seek political asylum there.

Speaking in three languages – Catalan, Spanish and French – he lambasted Madrid for its attempts to prosecute the region’s ousted leadership.

Puigdemont, who faces the charge of sedition in Spain, chose Belgium as his platform saying it was the only EU country to show sympathy for his separatist movement. Actually if he’d headed for Scotland he would have found a massive wave of support there, too!

He told the press conference he was there to bring the Catalan issue to a pan-European audience. “We came to Belgium to put forward the Catalan issue in the heart of the European Union. None of us have abandoned our work.”

Meanwhile some former Catalan ministers say moves by the Spanish government to assume control would be met with rebellion on the streets and a campaign of civil disobedience. Let’s hope this ends peacefully with the Catalans being allowed to move forward with their independence ambitions.
